Let’s imagine we’re creating a game where the player competes in the Olympic Games.
We want the player to compete in a range of track and field events.

Currently the moments are unlinked, so the player can play them in any order. But for this game we want a linear progression structure where we decide the order in which the player competes in our Olympic events.
But what should the order be? At this stage, we don’t really have any design criteria for ordering these moments.
One criterion we could use could be narrative. For example, perhaps the 400 metre sprint is an exciting event - so perhaps for dramatic purposes it should come at the end. But we aren’t writing a screenplay; we’re designing a game. We want to give the player the feeling that they’re getting better at sport: acquiring sporting skills and building on those skills to ever-greater feats of accomplishment. So let’s build a progression order for these events based on skill acquisition.
To work out a progression order based on acquiring skills, let’s first look at the list of sporting events we have and work out which skills are involved in each of those sports.
